How to Issue Digital Badges for Your Certification Program: Verifiable, Shareable, LinkedIn-Ready

Digital badges transform your certification into a verifiable credential practitioners can display on LinkedIn and share with clients. Here's how to set up a badge issuance program that adds real credibility to your credential.

How to Issue Digital Badges for Your Certification Program: Verifiable, Shareable, LinkedIn-Ready

For most of the twentieth century, a credential existed as a physical document — a certificate on paper, awarded once, stored in a drawer. Verifying it required contacting the issuing body directly, and most employers did not bother. Digital badges changed this. A properly issued digital badge contains embedded metadata that anyone can verify instantly: who earned it, what it certifies, who issued it, and whether it is still current.

For independent certification bodies — consultants, coaches, and professional associations running their own credentialing programs — digital badges resolve a credibility problem that has historically disadvantaged programs without institutional backing. A badge issued through Credly or Accredible carries a verification infrastructure that a paper certificate never can.

What Is a Digital Badge?

A digital badge is an image file with embedded metadata conforming to the Open Badges specification, maintained by IMS Global Learning Consortium. The metadata contains:

  • The issuing organization and its digital signature
  • The criteria the earner met to receive the badge
  • The date of issue (and expiry date, if applicable)
  • Verification data confirming the badge was actually issued by the stated issuer to the stated earner
  • Evidence (optional): links to work products or assessment results that demonstrate how the badge was earned

This embedded data is what distinguishes an Open Badge from a simple image of an award. Anyone who encounters the badge — an employer, a client, a conference organizer — can click through to verify it in seconds.

Choosing a Badge Issuance Platform

You do not need to build badge issuance infrastructure yourself. Several platforms handle the technical complexity, provide candidate-facing badge management, and integrate with LinkedIn:

  • Credly: the largest digital credential platform in the professional space; extensive employer network and LinkedIn integration; best for programs wanting maximum recognition and discoverability
  • Accredible: strong customization, white-labeling options, and certificate+badge combination issuance; popular with online course providers and professional associations
  • Sertifier: cost-effective option with good design tools and bulk issuance capabilities; suits programs at smaller scale
  • Badgr (Canvas Credentials): open-source foundation, strong in higher education integrations

For most independent certification bodies, Credly or Accredible will provide the best balance of credibility, discoverability, and functionality. Credly's network effects — the fact that many employers actively search Credly for candidate credentials — make it particularly valuable for programs whose certified practitioners are being assessed by corporate clients.

Setting Up Badge Criteria and Metadata

The criteria field — accessible to anyone who verifies the badge — describes what the earner had to do to receive it. This is your opportunity to communicate the rigour and specificity of your certification to people encountering it for the first time.

A well-written badge criteria statement includes:

  • What competencies the certification covers
  • How competence was assessed (examination, performance assessment, portfolio)
  • Any prerequisites (experience requirements, prior certifications)
  • The duration of the credential and renewal requirements
  • A link to the full certification standards

Many issuers write minimal criteria descriptions ('completed the required training') that tell verifiers nothing. A detailed criteria statement is free to write and significantly increases the perceived credibility of the credential.

Issuing Badges at Scale

Most platforms allow bulk badge issuance via CSV upload — a spreadsheet with earner name, email, and issue date. For programs processing tens or hundreds of certifications per year, this is the efficient path. For high-volume programs, API integration between your certification management system and your badge platform automates issuance entirely.

Send the badge notification email from your own domain, and include a short message explaining what the badge is, how to share it on LinkedIn, and what the renewal process looks like. Practitioners who understand how to use their badge are far more likely to display it actively — which is word-of-mouth marketing for your program.

Connecting Badges to LinkedIn

LinkedIn has a dedicated 'Licenses and Certifications' section, and Credly and Accredible both provide one-click 'Add to LinkedIn' functionality when a badge is accepted. Encourage every certified practitioner to add their badge to LinkedIn immediately upon receipt — this is when motivation is highest and the process is freshest.

Badges that appear on LinkedIn generate visibility that paper certificates never do. A practitioner who connects with a potential client on LinkedIn is automatically showing them their credentials — including yours. This network effect compounds as your certified community grows.
